Uncrowned Queens in Their Hats
In honor of the centennial of the Niagara Movement, the
Uncrowned Queens Institute for Research and Education on Women, Inc. is pleased
to present Uncrowned Queens in Their Hats.
The women on this Web page are representative of the Uncrowned Queens whose
histories the Institute is dedicated to preserve. While they are featured in
their church hats, these hats are symbolic of the many hats that women
"community builders" wear. These are the women who have supported our churches,
educated our children, entertained us, coiffed us, and taken care of us. They
also serve the community in government, the judiciary, media, and health care.
They have been instrumental on community boards, such as the American Red Cross,
American Cancer Society, University and College Boards of Trustees, and the
arts. They are members of sororities, women's clubs, missionaries, and other
sisterhood self-help organizations that give back to the community through a
myriad of programs. In addition, like their foremothers, they wear the hats of
mothers, spouses, daughters, sisters, aunts, and friends.
In honor of all the Uncrowned Queens: African American Women Community Builders, we salute you!
