Schylbea Jean Hopkins is a graduate of Ohio University, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree, with a major in Education and a minor in Mathematics. She earned her Masters of Education, in Guidance & Counseling and an Educational Specialist degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. She holds additional graduate hours in Elementary School Administration from Michigan State University, in Lansing Michigan.
After graduating from Ohio University, Ms. Hopkins accepted a teaching position with the Detroit Public Schools system where she advanced in elementary and middle school education holding the positions of teacher, counselor, staff coordinator, assistant principal and principal.
To her credits she enjoys the honor and career experience of establishing two schools from their inception. The Mae C. Jemison Academy, named for the first African American female astronaut Dr. Mae C. Jemison, is a school of choice within the Detroit Public Schools system. The Jemison Academy received national recognition for its pioneering curriculum in African Centered Education. In 1997, she was selected to establish and open the Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences, a charter school managed by The Edison Project of New York, NY.
Selected from 30 years of graduates of Libbey High School, Toledo, Ohio, Schylbea was inducted into the inaugural Libbey High School Hall of Fame in 1996, honoring her community service achievements. Her civic and professional affiliations include; board member of the Renaissance Women's Group, board member and past president of Professional Women's Network, member of the Ohio University College of Education Advancement Board, member of the Icon Academy Advisory Board of Directors, Golden Heritage member of NAACP, member of the Order of the Eastern Stars, Jewel Chapter #20, Golden Circle, La Paz #35, National Alliance of Black School Educators, Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc., National Council of Negro Women, National Coalition of 100 Black Women, National Association of Real Estate Brokers, and the Women's Council of Realtors. She is a member of the MOTTEP Board of Directors and the board of directors for the National Conference of Arts Michigan chapter She is a member of Hartford Memorial Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan, currently serving on the Trustee Board, the Finance Committee, and the Building and Properties Committee.
She is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and currently is serving as the Centennial Great Lakes Regional Director. She was the General Chairman for the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Biannual Conference held in Detroit, Michigan in July 2006. She served on the National Building and Properties Committee and is a former member of its Educational Advancement Foundation Board of Directors. Additionally, she has served as Basileus (president), Second Anti-Basileus (2nd vice president), and Tamiouchos (treasurer) of the Alpha Rho Omega chapter, Detroit, Michigan. She is also a member and past president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Foundation of Detroit and was the Building Manager for eight years.
Ms. Hopkins retired in July 1999, following 33 years of dedicated service in the field of Education. A licensed real estate agent for twenty-eight years, she is currently associated with A Star National Realty, Clavon Inc. in Detroit, Michigan. Schylbea Hopkins also is the president/CEO of S.J. Hopkins, L.L.C., a consulting firm.
