Ora B. Felts

She was born in Repton, AL. She was accomplished in the area of Community. She later died on 6-5-2010.

Ora was born March 1, 1927 in Repton, Alabama, the daughter of the late James and Caroline (Lindsey) Felts.


Ora was Valedictorian of Bethlehem Industrial Academy. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education where she majored in mathematics and minored in social studies. Upon graduation, Ora began working for the Bullock Board of Education as a Math and Social Studies Teacher at Union Springs High School. While there, she also coached the girls' basketball team.

In 1955, she moved to Niagara Falls to be with her sister Gertrude and brother RC. Ora was very ambitious. She found employment at the former Bellvue Dress Shop. She continued to follow her aspirations in becoming one of several blacks to work for the Niagara County Health Department in Lockport, NY. Still trying to continue and grow, Ora left the Health Department an began working as a Social Worker at Family and Children's Services in Niagara Falls.

Ora has always been passionate about seeing people and families prosper. She was actively involved in working with at risk youths, especially teenage mothers.

Ora was very instrumental in assisting young people to stay in school. She helped to hone into their talents God has given them. Ora firmly believed what her parents instilled in her that everyone should try to get an education. Her motto was "A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Waste."

Ora was also very active in civic and community groups. She was a life member of the NAACP. In 1963 she was present in Washington DC when Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. gave his famous speech, "I Have a Dream." What an honor that was for her.

In addition, Ora was the first African American to serve on the Planned Parenthood and Community Missions Board. She was a member of the Trylon Social Club. She was an avid Buffalo Bills fan.

Ora was actively involved at the New Hope Baptist Church until her health began to decline. She was a member of the Hosts and Hostesses Committee. Also, she worked on the Tenth Pastoral Anniversary Committee and formerly Women's Day Chairperson.

She enjoyed coming to fellowship and worship services at New Hope. She met wonderful friends there. Ora was very fond of her Pastor and First Lady.

Ora was one of the 2010 Honorees at the First Annual Women's History Month Program held in Buffalo, NY on March 6th. She received a Certificate of Merit from the Erie County Legislature.

Ora's life was centered around her family and she truly enjoyed spending time with her sisters, nieces, nephews and cousins. They were the joy of her soul. She had a comforting ear and a warm heart for everyone. Her words of wisdom will never be forgotten.

Ora passed away peacefully to be with the Lord on June 5, 2010.
