Eva M. Doyle

Eva M. Doyle, a native of Niagara Falls, is a retired Buffalo Public School teacher with 30 years of classroom experience. She received a Masters' Degree in Elementary Education. She also studied at Capella University toward a Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership. She received an Honorable Doctorate Degree in Humane Letters during the 148th graduation ceremony of Buffalo State College.

She lectures and writes extensively on African and African American History throughout Western New York. Mrs. Doyle is a Columnist for the oldest Black Newspaper in Western New York - the Buffalo Criterion. Her column Eye on History is now 44 years old. It began in the Challenger and has been published in the Buffalo News and in several national newspapers. She has also been the host of her own radio show for 14 years at the only Black-owned and operated radio station in Western New York, WUFO 1080.

For the past five years, she has created Billboards around the city to introduce African American history to the entire Western New York area. Mrs. Doyle has been active with the Buffalo Association of Black Journalists (BABJ) and has served as the Vice President of Print of this organization for several years. She is also a member of the Buffalo Retired Teachers Association and The Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations (ASCAC).

Mrs. Doyle published her 12th book in November 2021. It is available on Amazon.com. Her Eye on History Billboards can be seen around the city. She has received numerous awards for her work including being named New York State Distinguished Woman of the Year by State Senator Tim Kennedy and honored by Assemblywoman Crystal D. Peoples-Stokes. She also was named the Buffalo Citizen of the Year by the Buffalo News. In 2009, she received the Legend Award from the Black Achievers Award Program. In 2010, Mrs. Doyle ran for Lt. Governor of New York State on the Freedom Party Line. Mrs. Doyle is featured on the Freedom Wall among 28 Civil Rights leaders. The auditorium at the Merriweather Library has been named "The Dr. Eva M. Doyle Auditorium." She was also awarded The Ruby Dee on Fire to Inspire Award from Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She was honored by the WNY Minority Bar Association in 2015 for Community Service.

In October 2017, Mrs. Doyle received the prestigious Red Jacket Award from the Buffalo History Museum. This award is named in tribute to Red Jacket who was a renowned Native American orator and peacemaker. President George Washington presented the medal to Red Jacket in recognition of his great work. Mrs. Doyle received the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award in Education in January 2022 from the City-Wide Celebration Committee honoring the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Mrs. Doyle is one of 28 community and national leaders featured on the Freedom Wall located in the African American Heritage Corridor. It is on Michigan and East Ferry Street in Buffalo. The Freedom Wall honors such notable Americans as Rosa Parks, Mary B. Talbert, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Mrs. Doyle has introduced over 100 Essay Contests for youth and adults. She is proud of being the Founder of the Romeo Doyle Muhammad Scholarship named in honor of her late husband, a Veteran of the Korean War. Every year she presents Scholarships to students of color who will attend college in the fall. On July 9, 2022, she presented Scholarships to four outstanding students at the 13th Annual Romeo Doyle Muhammad Scholarship Program. This award is always presented during the birth month of her late husband.

Mrs. Doyle also created the annual Roses for Outstanding Women Awards where she has honored over 300 women in Western New York for their contributions to our community. Mrs. Doyle is the mother of three children, grandmother of seven, and great-grandmother of five. Her motto is: Learning is a Lifelong Process.

Eva M. Doyle is a columnist, educator, and community activist. She is the author of the column "Eye On History." Her column began in The Buffalo Challenger in February 1979 and continues today in the Buffalo Criterion - the oldest black newspaper in Western New York. Mrs. Doyle has written thousands of articles on African and African American History during the past twenty-two years. She also is the author of six books. The titles include: Eye on History, Book 1; Buffalo's Black Community; Motivating Children To Write; Jambo: Let's Count; Celebrating Kwanzaa in Buffalo; and Marcus Garvey: Read, Learn, and Remember. Mrs. Doyle also created the Eye On History Newsletter for Families and the Eye On History series of t-shirts that feature drawings of outstanding African Americans.

As a teacher in the Buffalo Public Schools for the past twenty-six years, her goal has always been to integrate the correct history of African people into the school curriculum. As a result, Mrs. Doyle founded the African American Curriculum Resource Center at the Campus West School in 1994. This Center is the only one of its kind in the entire Buffalo School District. The Center services students, teachers, and the general community by providing a wide array of books, teacher guides, posters, videos, magazines, bibliographies, and general information about the contributions of African people to world civilization.

Mrs. Doyle has been a frequent guest on radio and television programs discussing the issues that surround the African American community, both locally and nationally. She continues to work for the full inclusion of African History into the school curriculum. She serves on a variety of school-based committees such as the Multicultural Educational Instructional Support Team (M.E.I.S.T. Team) and Project S.E.E.D. (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity).

Mrs. Doyle has received over thirty-four awards for her work in the community including the Woman of Greatness Award, Life Community Center in Rochester; Black Achievers in Industry Award, 1490 Jefferson Enterprises; Media Award, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; Certificate of Appreciation, Buffalo Board of Education; and Certificate of Appreciation from the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library.

In 1997, Mrs. Doyle was selected as one of thirty-four outstanding teachers nationwide by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education to participate in a conference in Washington, D.C. on issues in education. Mrs. Doyle is married to Romeo Muhammad and is the mother of three and the grandmother of seven children.
