Nellie M. King Ashford

Nellie Ashford was born on July 13, 1922, the daughter of the late Charles and Ivery (Gilbert) King.
Nellie attended The Prestigious Philadelphia School for Girls, graduating in 1949. She received a registered nursing degree from Mercy Douglas Nursing School. Mrs. Ashford was the first African American supervisor and head nurse at the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center.
She was a longtime member of the St. John AME Church where she served in various ministries, including steward board and Sunday School teacher.
Throughout her lifetime she received many awards, including "The TOPS Good Neighbor Award" and "The President's Medal" from Niagara University.
Mrs. Ashford was married to Emmett Ashford Sr., and they had three children, Emmett Ashford Jr., Eric J. Ashford and Edna Elaine Ashford Tullos. She was a foster parent for over 30 years and fostered over 100 children and adopted three children, Dustin Barbara, Abrahiem K. Ashford and Jamarcus Wilson.
