Dr. Joseph C Melvin

He was born in Tappahannock, VA. He is accomplished in the area of Education.

Dr. Joseph C. Melvin served as community superintendent in Buffalo, New York from 2007-2010, where he supervised 22 schools and two charter schools. He also served as a secondary and elementary school principal with Norfolk Public Schools in Norfolk, Virginia for a total of 9 years. During Dr. Melvin's tenure as principal in Norfolk Public Schools, the school district won the coveted "Broad Prize" for Urban Excellence in 2005. This million dollar award is given to the nation's top "Urban School" district in the country in improving student achievement and closing the achievement gap.
He received an undergraduate degree of business administration and management from Norfolk State University. He later obtained a master's degree of business administration and finance from Hampton University, a professional teaching certificate and principal certification from Old Dominion University, a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies of educational administration from Virginia Tech, and Doctorate Degree of educational leadership and policy studies from Virginia Tech.
He has previously held positions in business with Dun and Bradstreet Company prior to his career in education. Dr. Melvin is currently superintendent of schools in Essex County, Virginia.
Dr. Melvin is a charter member of the Hampton Roads 200+ Men, Inc., a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and many community organizations. He also is a previous and current member of several professional organizations, Norfolk Secondary Principals' Association, the National Association of Elementary Principals, the National Association of Secondary Schools Principals, Association of School Superintendents, Virginia Association of School Superintendents and Tappahannock Rotary Club..
Dr. Melvin was awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to Berlin, Germany for Educational Leadership in 2006. He has also traveled with Virginia Tech and participated in panel discussions in Beijing, China to study the educational systems abroad.
