Joan L. Simmons was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Now retired from private industry, she began her professional career working for major corporations in the telecommunications and airline industries, both in the United States and Canada. She has held positions as, Human Resources Representative, Labor Relations Representative, where she heard grievances and rendered decisions as the designee for (3) regional Vice-Presidents and the President of the Food Services Division, Manager of Customer Service and Manager of Customer Systems, specializing in call center design and implementation.
A lifelong community activist, she is Founder and President of the Niagara Frontier Movement for the Advocacy of African-American Human Rights, Inc. A Buffalo based non-profit corporation whose primary mission is to support, depend and promote state and federal human rights of African-American citizens, as guaranteed by law, statues and regulations. A major initiative that the Niagara Frontier Movement for the Advocacy of African-American Human Rights has undertaken is "Equality in Education Opportunity". She believes strongly that access to a quality public education is a Human Right and through this initiative has and will continue to utilize legal enforcement actions, as a principal tool to protect and defend the guaranteed Human Rights of African-American public school students in Buffalo.
