Louisiana Thomas Hilliard

Louisiana Hilliard is the first lady of the Humboldt Parkway Baptist Church. She was born in Anniston, Alabama and is the oldest of twelve children. Nine siblings are still living. Her mother was May Thomas McClurkin also born in Anniston, Alabama. Her father was Gus Thomas.
In 1946 she moved to Buffalo with a friend with whom she graduated from high school. . She met and married Rev. John Hilliard in 1948. They have been married 57 years. Rev. Hilliard is the spiritual leader of the Humboldt Parkway Baptist Church, originally the historic Michigan Avenue Baptist Church. She has six children, all living in Atlanta, Georgia. Her eldest is deceased. She also has eight grandchildren. Her hobbies include sewing and traveling but her favorite is traveling, especially, on cruise ships. She has cruised to the southern Caribbean and the Mediterranean. She has also traveled to Istanbul and Egypt.
As the first lady of the Humboldt Parkway Baptist Church, she is very active. Louisiana has taught the Adult Women's Class for thirty years. She is affectionately called, L.A. and is noted for her gentle spirit and willingness to assist whenever and wherever necessary. She is also active in numerous church organizations including the Sunday school and the Missionary Society. If a member is out sick or hasn't been seen in church for a few Sundays, they can expect a call from Mrs. Hilliard.
Louisiana has also served the elderly community for twenty five years as a volunteer through the Meals on Wheels Program. The community also recognizes her contributions. In 2001, she was the recipient of the Black Achievers Award.
