John F. Gibbs MD

Dr John Gibbs is a native Californian who spent his early life in the city of San Francisco and later, grew up on a farm in Southern California. He obtained his BS in Bioengineering and Medical Degree from the University of California at San Diego. His surgical residency was completed at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL followed by 6 additional years of fellowship training in liver transplantation at the Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, TX and surgical oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI).
After joining RPCI in 1996, he was appointed Chief of GI Surgery & Endoscopy 4 years later. Dr. Gibbs went on to complete an advanced administrative degree in Health Care Management from Harvard University. He is a Professor of Surgery at the State University of New York at Buffalo and serves as Vice Chair for Research. His area of clinical interests lies in the management of complex gastrointestinal cancers. His laboratory researches focuses on developing adoptive dendritic cell immunotherapy against pancreatic cancer.
Dr. Gibbs is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery. He has been continuously recognized as one of America's Best Doctors. Dr. Gibbs is a member of many honor, specialty, and subspecialty surgical societies. He serves on several editorial boards and has authored or co-authored more than 300 journal articles, book chapters, and abstracts.
Dr. Gibbs is actively committed to professional education through national meeting and lectures. He has been recognized on multiple occasions by the medical students and surgical trainees. He regularly is involved in Career Day activities at our local schools. His greatest sense of joy comes from mentoring students of all ages.
