John "Chess" Braxton was a longtime employee of the City of Lackawanna and a political and civic leader. He worked for over 30 years with the Department of Public Works, served on the board of commissioners for the Metro Housing Authority and was one of the founders of the First Ward Booster Club of Lackawanna. He was a member of the NAACP; Big Brothers and Sisters and Peace Corps Volunteers. He was a member and trustee of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church.
Mr. Braxton was 80 years of age at the time of his death. He is buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
