Danielle Taana Smith

Dr. Danielle Smith is a woman of high ethical standards, who is embedded in both her global and local communities. She is a native of Liberia, West Africa. As an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the Rochester Institute of Technology, she teaches several classes, continues to publish articles in prestigious journals, and still makes time for her family and mentees.

Dr. Smith received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College in English Language and Literature in Hanover, New Hampshire. She received a Master's in Business Administration from Saint Martin's College in Lacey, Washington and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of South Carolina. Her dissertation is entitled:
"Developing Entrepreneurship in African American Communities: A Means of Social and Economic Development".

Dr. Smith serves in a number of professional and community organizations including: the Community and Urban Section and Race, Class and Gender Section of the American Sociological Association; the Rochester Refugee Mental Health Committee; the Liberian Community of Rochester (LICOR); and the Refugee Community Advisory Board for the Brown Square Refugee Health Program.

Dr. Smith became an Assistant Professor of Sociology at RIT in 2003 and teaches several classes including: Diversity in the City, Sociology of the Family, and Minority Group Relations. She has published in journals such as Journal of Global Awareness, Critical Pedagogy in the Sociology Classroom; and Journal of Black Studies. She is an exceptional mentor and role model for her present and past students and advisor for the International Studies program and Urban and Community Studies program. This year Dr. Smith along with a fellow professor received an $18,000 grant to research curricular strategies for teaching about issues on war and terror. Creative expressions of art and literature were submitted by K-16 students to show their interpretations of our global society. These works will later be compiled into a book. Dr. Smith is the mother of Donald and Donlandra Cooper and is a member of Jubilee Family Worship Center.
